Emir Baigazin

Emir Baigazin

I respect and know a lot of big names in cinema, but I get my inspiration more from the fine arts—from paintings rather than any directors in particular.

Born in 1984 in Alga Province in Kazakhstan, Emir Baigazin studied Direction and Cinema at the Kazakh National Academy of Arts in Almaty and also in the Asian Film Academy (AFA) at the Busan Film Festival led by Thai director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang and Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf. His debut feature HARMONY LESSONS won a Silver Bear for an Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlinale 2013, among over 20 other recognitions worldwide (film festivals in Sao Paulo, Seattle, Tribeca, and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia). THE WOUNDED ANGEL, which had won the International Arte Prize at the Berlinale Co-Production Market and Work-in-Progress Prize at the Sarajevo FF, premiered at Berlinale Panorama 2016.
