It is impossible to perceive the post-Soviet space portrayed by Western film directors. This type of cinema considers the superficial material reality, and it often looks hopeless. I mean to say that their position is that if, economically, everything is bad, then it is bad in all other respects. Here everything is the opposite, and at the same time people are ready to defend this land if necessary. And here is the question: what holds them there, and why?

Roman Bondarchuk graduated from the Kyiv State Institute of Theater and Cinema. His graduation film TAXI DRIVER won the White Elephant prize from the Russian Film Critic Guild and the Russian Producers’ Grand Prix at the Kinoshok Open film festival. UKRAINIAN SHERIFFS (2015) was his first feature-length documentary which won a Special Jury Award at IDFA 2015, Grand Prix of Docs Against Gravity, was screened at numerous international film festivals including Toronto Hot Doc and became the Ukrainian Entry for the Oscar in 2017. Bondachuk is an artdirector of Docudays.UA IFF in Kyiv. VOLCANO (2018) is his first full length feature film.
