Philip Gröning



Philip Gröning was born in 1959 in Düsseldorf, Germany. He studied Medicine and Psychology before turning to filmmaking. He founded his own production company in 1986 while still studying at HFF Munich. He produces, writes and directs all of his films and is also the cinematographer and editor for most of them.
In 1992 his film THE TERRORISTS! won the Bronze Leopard at Locarno IFF. His documentary INTO GREAT SILENCE (2005) won awards including the Special Jury Prize at Sundance, the European Film Award and the German Film Critics’ Award. In 2013 THE POLICE OFFICER'S WIFE won the Special Jury Prize at the 70th Venice International Film Festival. His film MY BROTHER'S NAME IS ROBERT AND HE IS AN IDIOT (2018) was selected to compete for the Golden Bear in the main competition section at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival and won the Best Director New Visions Award at Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.
Philip Gröning was the jury president of the Orrizonti section at the Venice international film festival in 2006, member of the main international jury at Venice international filmfestival 2014, member of the jury at the Filmfest Munich in 2009, and jury member at the Message of Man Festival in St Petersburg 2014. He is lecturing at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy since 2001 and is a professor at International Film School in Cologne. He is also a member of the German Film Academy, the European Film Academy and the Bavarian Academy of the fine Arts.
