Biography

Alla Kovgan (1973, Russia) divides her time between Moscow and New York City, making films and performances. She has 15 years of experience working with dance film collaborations on screen and in the theatre, and a strong record as a documentary editor. Her film NORA, about Zimbabwe-born choreographer Nora Chipaumire, has been presented at more than 120 festivals as well as MOMA, the Louvre and the Tate Modern. It received thirty awards in various genres (fiction, documentary, video art) and was broadcast on ARTE/ZDF, PBS, TV3, NRK and SVT. It also represented the United States at INPUT 2011. Kovgan recently co-directed and edited the Emmy-nominated TRACES OF THE TRADE (Sundance, PBS) and MOVEMENT (R)EVOLUTION AFRICA (ARTE/ ZDF). She also edited MY PERESTROIKA (Sundance, PBS, Full Frame). Kovgan has received many awards, including a Poynter Fellowship at Yale University, Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship and Brother Thomas Fellowship for artists working at a high level of excellence and creativity.
