Biography

Dean studied acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Since graduating he has lived in several countries including Australia and Hong Kong, where he worked as a dub artist. In Europe, he produced the R&D for several art exhibitions including Jean Paul Gaultier’s ‘Pain Couture’ at the Cartier Foundation, Paris, 2004. Dean’s induction to film production came as an associate producer for a micro budget film, PLANS OF MAN, for which he secured sponsorship from Virgin Airlines, Paul Smith and Agnes B. As an actor, he worked mostly in theatre and commercials. With friends, Dean created a web series called Jack Malchance, cast included Valene Kane (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Julian Miller (Spy). Jack Malchance won several online competitions, including a Webby for best web drama and Dean was flown to L.A to pitch the project to networks. In 2011, he devised and directed four improvised short films including METRO 7 BIS which was shot in Paris. METRO 7 BIS travelled to many festivals including Palm Springs Shortfest, Austin Film Festival and was shown on PBS. WHITE which he made in Los Angeles while attending Palm Springs Shortfest was seen by Paul Greengrass (Captain Philips) who said "White featured great improvisation and really transported the viewer into the LA street world. Great authenticity and bite, and in a good way, left me wanting more.” His short film UNDER with Keeley Forsyth (JK Rowling's 'The Casual Vacancy') in the lead role and a cameo from Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) was screened at Bristol Encounters, Austin Film Festival, London Short Film Festival among others. His most recent short, DANIEL with cast including Hilda Peter (Peter Strickland’s Katalin Varga) travelled to over 30 international festivals, was nominated for several awards and was one of the BFI’s '10 to try’ at the London Short Film Festival 2016. Dean is a Berlinale Talent Campus Alumni (2016) and was recently selected by BFI/BAFTA to take part in their FLARE mentorship program, his mentor was Iain Canning (Lion, Top of the Lake, The Kings Speech). Splitting his time between LONDON and NEW YORK he is developing his first feature, NATHAN WON'T RIDE set in his hometown, Nottingham.
