After working for 12 years in radio broadcast, Jose Álvarez directed the short film VENUS, which obtained several national and international awards in the festivals of Morelia, Rotterdam and Toulouse.

In 2009, he finished his first feature film FLOWERS IN THE DESERT, a documentary about the Huichol people that obtained the Special Mention for documentary feature film at the Morelia Film Festival, and that took part in the official selection of Hot Docs and Cine Latino, among other festivals.

In 2011, his second documentary CANICULA received the FIPRESCI award in Thessaloniki, the SIGNIS Award in Cine Latino and the Jury Prize at the Riviera Maya Film Festival. It was also presented at the Guadalajara Film Festival, at the Havana Film Festival and at the MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight.

His 2016 film THE GAZE OF THE SEA had its world premiere at Guadalajara IFF and also screened at Visions du Réel.
