Biography

Hana Makhmalbaf was born in 1988, in Tehran. At the age of 18, she made her first feature, BUDDHA COLLAPSED OUT OF SHAME (2007), in Bamian, Afghanistan. The film was enormously well received around the world, winning many prestigious awards; including the Crystal Bear for Best Feature Film and the Peace Film Award at the 2008 Berlin IFF, Special Jury Prize and the Spanish TVE La Otra Mirada Award at the 2007 San Sebastian IFF, the Paolo Ungari/Unicef Prize at the 2007 Rome FF, the Daniel Langlois Innovation Award at the 2007 Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Montreal, and the Woman & Equality Award at the 2007 Thessaloniki IFF.
Makhmalbaf’s filmography also includes the documentary GREEN DAYS (2009), which premiered at the 2009 Venice IFF and won the Bravery Prize; feature documentary JOY OF MADNESS (2003), which also premiered at the Venice IFF, when the director was only 14 years old.
