Biography

Mohamad Malas (b. 1945, Golan Heights) worked as a teacher before moving to Moscow to study filmmaking at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). During his time at VGIK he directed several short films. After his return to Syria, Malas worked in Syrian Television, where he produced several short films including QUNEITRA 74 (1974) and THE MEMORY (1975). His critically acclaimed first feature, DREAMS OF THE CITY (1984, Cannes) and his second feature, THE NIGHT (1992), are considered among the best films in Arab cinema. Malas is one of Syria’s first auteur filmmakers.
