Biography

«Once you’ve finished something, it’s not yours anymore, you just have to show it». It was this comment by Nan Goldin – with whom Valérie Massadian has had a long working relationship – that opened up a new direction for this filmmaker. It was through photography that she came to image-making, notably in the form of slide-show screenings (The Link, Mary Go Round, Journal de Bord), exhibited in Tokyo, London and Porto. What she has retained from photography is its freedom and the rigours of frontal contact, and has taken this same approach, committing to a project from concept to completion, in her collaborations with several directors. And in the desire to make her own film, hence the short NINOUCHE, of which NANA is the long version.
