Mattie Do

Laos

I didn’t watch a lot of films, and don’t know a lot about classics or famous films that have come before me, I’m just doing the stories that I find interesting. And it’s working.

Mattie Do was born in California to Laotian parents. In 2010, she returned to Laos after her father retired. Her debut feature film, CHANTHALY (2013) not only made her the first woman to direct a feature film in Laos, but it also went on to become the first Lao film to screen outside of Asia at international film festivals throughout North America and Europe. Mattie also became the first Laotian filmmaker to present a Lao film at the Cannes La Fabrique des Cinemas du Monde as one of ten international filmmakers to participate, and one of twenty at the Toronto IFF Talent Lab. Her second film, DEAREST SISTER (2016), was presented in Sitges IFF, where it won a Special Jury Mention. It was also selected as the first Lao entry to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language film. Her latest film, THE LONG WALK (2019), premiered in Venice's Giornate degli Autori, and which earned her Best Director in the Noves Visions category at Sitges IFF.
