Biography

Born in 1958 in Toronto to Swiss parents, Peter Mettler studied cinema at Ryerson University where he directed two short films, LANCALOT FREELY (1980) and GREGORY (1981), as well as his first feature, SCISSERE (1982), for which he was awarded the Norman McLaren Prize at the Canadian Student Film Festival. In 1989, he made THE TOP OF HIS HEAD, nominated for Best Screenplay at the Genie Awards, followed, among others, by PICTURE OF LIGHT (1994), awarded the La Sarraz Prize in Locarno the same year and GAMBLING, GODS AND LSD (2002) which won the Grand Prix at Visions du Réel and the Genie Award for Best Documentary in 2003. Mettler bridges the gap between experimental, narrative, personal essay and documentary.
