Biography

Dechen Roder (born 1980, Bumthang, Bhutan) never went to film school. She entered the industry and has learned on the job and through self-training. Since 2004 she has made multiple documentaries aired on Bhutan National TV; her work Young People on Wheels was nominated for the UNICEF Child Rights Awards in 2006. In 2011 she produced her first short fiction; with no budget she performed most key roles herself; AN ORIGINAL PHOTOCOPY OF HAPPINESS was nominated for Best Short Film in the Brussels International Independent Film Festival 2011 and won Jury Mention at the 17 th ifva Hong Kong Awards (2012). Her second short film, HEART IN THE MANDALA, is currently being submitted to film festivals for consideration. With her feature, she hopes to contribute to a new Bhutanese cinema and voice, untutored by conventional (Western) structures and forms, and more in line with Bhutanese oral storytelling traditions.
