Filmmaking for me is about creating intimate space between strangers to find out more about the other, while re-examining our own emotions and how we see the world.    


Hikaru Toda is a director/editor based in London and Osaka, Japan exploring the personal and the political spaces between 'strangers' and 'outsiders' with humor and wit. Her films have aired internationally on channels including the BBC, France Televisions, NHK, ABC and screened in major international film festivals including Hot Docs, Hong Kong International FF, Tokyo International FF, CPH DOX and Melbourne International Film Festival. Hikaru grew up in Holland and studied Visual Anthropology and Performance Art in Goldsmiths, University of London. After graduating with honors, she started working in the arts before moving into independent documentaries. She has previously co-directed LOVE HOTEL (2014) and for her directorial debut OF LOVE & LAW (2017), she moved to Japan for the first time in 22 years. OF LOVE & LAW has so far won the Firebird Award for Best Documentary at Hong Kong International Film Festival (2018) and Best Film in Japanese Cinema Splash category at Tokyo International Film Festival (2017).
