Biography

Belgian born director and scriptwriter Ann-Julie Vervaeke (’87) obtained a Master in Audiovisual arts (specialisation Film) at KASK after graduating from the University of Ghent in History of Art. In her thesis she discussed the filmic elements that are necessary to establish a transfer of experience from film towards spectator. For this study she analysed the films of Carlos Reygadas and Fien Troch. The “unspoken” is the connecting thread throughout her work. In 2014, immediately after her studies, Vervaeke won the prize for best debut at the International Short Film Festival in Leuven with her film LE PLI DANS L'ESPACE (WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES). The film tells the story of Allison, a curious, yet destructive eleven year-old girl. After her parents’ divorce she is troubled with dark thoughts. She clings to her memories, which manifest themselves in her reality as dreams. Vervaeke wrote the script and directed the film in aproduction by Earlybirds Films. In early 2016 she won Best Short film and the European Youth Film Festival. In december 2015 she received the script funding from the Flemish Audiovisual fund for her upcoming project, WATERWOLF (working title).
