    Drama

1989 is the year Katrin was born in East Berlin. It is the year her mother abandoned her and was killed. It is the year of the change, the fail of an utopia, of a slice of world, of a world of memories.

Today, Katrin is alone, raised in Rome, in an immutable city where she does not belong. Here she lives the last moments of clearness of her father, Paul, affected by Alzheimer's disease. So, before it is too late, she decides to take him to Berlin, to take back, one last time, his past, to let him confront the city which enclose his farthest and most intense memories. In East Berlin Paul was born and lived until the fall of the Wall. There, he loved Katrin’s mother, who, though, mysteriously abandoned him to try crossing the Spree to the West. Katrin will discover more than she could have imagined, her father’s memory, now weak - almost nonexistent - shows her the pieces of a puzzle which is up to her to put back together: the truth about the story of a family, of a love, of a need for freedom.

A mystery about change, about what we want to remember and what hurts us and we are willing to forget. An implacable illness, a secret buried under the ruins of a city which is constantly deleting.

Essentially, I don't like to feel trapped in a single style. I like to wander through genres, asking myself what we, today, can do to make a story fresher and more personal. In my mind, the more that documentaries and story-based films can interact with one another, the better it is. Stories and characters I love come before everything else.

Francesca Mazzoleni (Catania, 1989), director and screenwriter, graduated from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. She has directed short films, such as IL PREMIO (2014), which won a Silver Ribbon nomination from the Italian Journalists Association, along with 1989 (2015), and documentaries, such as NOWHERE (2015) and BARS (2014) which were awarded in numerous international film festivals. THAT’S LIFE (2018) was her first feature. Her second feature film, PUNTA SACRA (2020), won the Sesterce d' Or La Mobilière for Best Film at Visions du Réel 2020.
