Aspiring actress Vicki finally lands the lead role after trying out at Daniel’s audition, but starts experiencing an eating and speech disorders once the film starts production. The film shoot turns out to be a place where silent abuse and sadistic violence is accepted as artistic passion. She starts to hears ghostlike voices and see women resembling her hovering nearby. She claims these phantomlike beings are her alter ego and the voices of her inner self. When she reaches a point whereby she can no longer move nor speak, the film comes to an end. Filmmaker Daniel Hui, by using his own name for a character in the film, suggests that this is his self-reflexive take on film as art. As it contemplates the relationship between art and violence, the film bills itself as a ghost story, a horror film and somewhat of a satire on filmmaking. In the last scene where there is a shift in power relations, the double printing technique used on Daniel’s blood-covered face and the authoritative demeanor of Vicki symbolically reveal how art and violence, cruelty and passion overlap.
