Sam Lara grew up immersed in the film industry, traveling with her documentary-filmmaker parents. She won her first film award when she was 10 years old for a documentary about human rights. At 16 she moved to Brisbane to attend Queensland Academy for Creative Industries, graduating in 2011 as top of her cohort in Theatre, Film and Environmental Studies. After time spent acting in various theatre productions, she discovered a passion for filmmaking. Since then, she has had fiction and non-fiction writing published, produced several award-winning short films, screened in competition at Sydney Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival, received an ATOM Awards nomination, won a Queensland New Filmmakers Award and won Best Youth Film at St Kilda Film Festival. She completed a Bachelor of Film and Television at Bond University in 2015 and is now working full-time as an Assistant Director on feature films, TV series and TVCs and as a producer and director of short films, music videos and factual content. Her latest short film FEATHERWEIGHT (2019) was selected for the Accelerator Lab program at the Melbourne International Film Festival 2019 and nominated for a Dendy Award for Australian Short Films at the Sydney Film Festival 2019.
