In the northern frontier of Iran, director Babak Jalali mines absurdist humour and quiet pathos from the immutable routines of a group of men. Against visually serene compositions and a plaintive score, Jalali teases out the intense longing hidden behind his characters’ stoic expressions, crafting a humane and drolly charming first feature that leaves an indelible impression.

I like generally things which happen in a short space of time.

Born in Iran in 1978, Babak Jalali has lived in London since 1986. He studied Balkan and East European studies as well as politics at University College London and then attended London Film School. His debut feature film FRONTIER BLUES premiered in competition at Locarno and received multiple awards at international festivals. His second feature film RADIO DREAMS won the 2016 Hivos Tiger Awards Competition in Rotterdam. Jalali's most recent film, LAND (2018), had its world premiere in the Berlinale Panorama.
