From placing the camera at ground-level — a la Yasujirō Ozu — to purposefully playing with point of views and suspensions of the shot-reverse-shot continuum in all the scenes at the police station, Mariam offers loads to please the viewer with.

When I say that I do not watch so many movies, many moviegoers are surprised... I feel that watching what other directors are doing would make me emulate them and move away from my own freedom. I like movies, but I want to make an honest movie that corresponds to my own truth.

Sharipa Urazbayeva was born in 1985. Graduated from the Kazakh National Academy of Arts after named T.Zhurgenov in “Film and TV Production” (2010), in 2013 graduated from a filmmaking course in the Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts, from a workshop by Georgian director I.M.Kvirikadze. In 2013, she finished an international internship in the study of the technology of film in Lisbon University Nova (Portugal). Her filmography includes THE POTATO EATERS (2016), EGO (2014), MIMI (2013), SOURCE (2012). MARIAM (2019) is her first feature film and premiered at the Locarno FF.
