Lake Titicaca. 1984. In a confusing accident, Morgan Cabrera—a renowned engineer from La Paz—falls into the water and drowns. They search for his corpse for several days before it is discovered on an island. A commission is sent over to recognize it: Engineer Peralta (50), partner of the missing person; Engineer Kunurana (35), Cabrera’s assistant; officer Rilber Silva; a local policeman who owns all the tricks of his trade; and Saturnino Poma, a bilingual community member who besides navigating the boat, will become a translator for both worlds. The story begins with the group aboard a small boat and narrates the events of a single day in the lives of the characters chronologically. When the engineers arrive, the community members—who speak only Aymara—refuse to allow them to take the corpse because they believe that doing so will ward off the possibility of a bountiful harvest. The protagonists are outraged and begin to argue, desperately seeking to come to an agreement. Poma helps them communicate. Officer Silva loses all authority by getting drunk. Peralta and Kunurana negotiate, all the while deeply affected by the presence of the corpse. Finally, the community members allow them to take the corpse, but it never reaches its destination.
