    Baghdad is a 17-year-old female skater, who lives in Freguesia do Ó, a working-class neighborhood in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Baghdad skateboards with a group of male friends and spends a lot of time with her family and with her mother’s friends. Together, the women around her form a network of people who are out of the ordinary. When Baghdad meets a group of female skateboarders, her life suddenly changes.

    Caru Alves de Souza (Brazil, 1979) is a director, screenwriter and producer. She has directed two documentaries, MASCARIANAS (2008) and VESTIGIOS (2010) for TV Cultura. She also directed and scripted the short FAMILY AFFAIR (2011), which had its world premiere at the San Francisco International LGBTQ+ FF and was distributed on DVD in the United Kingdom by Peccadillo Pictures. Her next film was the short THE WORLD OF ULIM AND OILUT (2011), had its world premiere at the Chicago International Children’s FF. Her debut feature, UNDERAGE (2013) had its world premiere at the 61st San Sebastian FF and was awarded Best Film at the Rio IFF. The film was also acquired by HBO Latin America and Canal Brasil. She then directed 10 episodes of the second season of the television documentary series CAUSANDO NA RUA (2016) for the CINEBRASiLTV channel. Her second feature film as director/scriptwriter, MY NAME IS BAGHDAD (2020) received a grant from the Tribeca Film Institute’s Latin America Fund for projects in advanced stages of development, along with a grant from the Ibermedia Programme’s Development Support in 2015. The film had its world premiere at Berlinale Generation 2020.
