The radical nationalist movement is growing ever stronger in Poland. This fall 60,000 nationalists demonstrated for a white Poland in Warsaw. Andrzej Jakimowski’s film situates itself at the heart of these political developments in this engaging film in which the main character, Mareczek, is played with absolute presence by Grzegorz Palkowski. He is a law student who has just been evicted from his home and is trying to set up overnight quarters for his mother and his small dog on the streets at the same time as he is seeing his girlfriend. Mareczek’s walks through the city illustrate a disturbing portrait of a fragile and violent society, where the leap from a calm, middle-class existence to homelessness and violence is all too small.
