“Oxygen” is a free re-enactment of a real case: a man who tried to cross the Danube illegally using an oxygen cylinder, to escape the communist Romania. Yet, the facts are reinterpreted in a highly subjective vision. On the border between fiction, documentary and visual art, the film depicts an emotional landscape, a man’s inner journey towards a healing hereafter.
During the communist dictatorship in Romania (1945-1989), thousands of people risked their lives in the attempt to run away from the country. Despair made them invent the most incredible methods to cross the border illegally. Some of them managed to escape, but many lost their lives in these attempts.

We hope to open up a dialogue with the viewer, a space for (self)-reflection and transformation. We hope the audience may be challenged to reevaluate their experience and ideas about intimacy. We hope to trigger the viewer’s curiosity about the Other, someone else who may be different, and increase our empathic ability to place ourselves inside that Other’s skin.

Romanian artist and directorm Adina Pintilie graduated from the Caragiale University of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography in Bucharest in 2008. Her films have won several awards including the Zonta Prize at the 2013 International Short Film Festival Oberhausen for DIARY #2. Poised on the border between fiction, documentary and fine art, her work is characterised by a highly individual visual style, the courage to experiment with visual language and an uncompromising exploration of the human psyche. Since 2010 she has been the curator of the Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival (BIEFF). Her most recent feature TOUCH ME NOT won the Golden Bear at the 2018 Berlinale.
