“Oxygen” is a free re-enactment of a real case: a man who tried to cross the Danube illegally using an oxygen cylinder, to escape the communist Romania. Yet, the facts are reinterpreted in a highly subjective vision. On the border between fiction, documentary and visual art, the film depicts an emotional landscape, a man’s inner journey towards a healing hereafter.
During the communist dictatorship in Romania (1945-1989), thousands of people risked their lives in the attempt to run away from the country. Despair made them invent the most incredible methods to cross the border illegally. Some of them managed to escape, but many lost their lives in these attempts.

We hope to open up a dialogue with the viewer, a space for (self)-reflection and transformation. We hope the audience may be challenged to reevaluate their experience and ideas about intimacy. We hope to trigger the viewer’s curiosity about the Other, someone else who may be different, and increase our empathic ability to place ourselves inside that Other’s skin.

Romanian filmmaker and visual artist Adina Pintilie graduated from the National Univerity of Theater and Film Bucharest. Her first feature TOUCH ME NOT won the Golden Bear and Best First Feature at the 2018 Berlinale, was nominated for the European Discovery Award at the European Film Academy Awards and was sold to 40 countries. It screened at Toronto, Karlovy Vary, BFI London, MoMA New York and other top festivals, received positive reviews in the New York Times, Hollywood Reporter, Sight&Sound, Télérama, Les Inrockuptibles, Indiewire, Die Welt, Die Zeit and many others. Her previous short, OXYGEN (2010), premiered at Rotterdam. Her medium-length DONT GET ME WRONG (2007) premiered at Locarno and went on to have an impressive festival career. On the fluid border between reality and fiction, born of innovative research processes with a profound social impact, her works are a singular phenomenon within the Romanian cultural landscape, standing out through cutting-edge aesthetics and an uncompromising exploration of human psyche.
