Turin, Italy. The Platz is one of the biggest shantytowns in Europe. A plan to break it up is imposed onto a community made up of the 1,000-plus people who live there: some families are registered with the authorities and might be transferred to new housing, while many others will have to return to their own countries, or find another temporary solution. In a labyrinthine immersion, RIVER MEMORIES portrays the last few months of existence of the Platz.

    Director's Statement

When we heard about the beginning of the process of breaking up the Platz—the shantytown on Lungo Stura Lazio, a stone’s throw from our home, in the northern outskirts of Turin, where our feature film RIVER MEMORIES had been partly set—we decided to immerse ourselves in the daily life of the last year and a half of existence of this labyrinth of shacks. As we got to know and film it, we realized this was not so much about documenting what happened, but rather gathering memories and impressions, as in an impossible act of resistance, preserving images, dignity, words and gestures. The collection of this sort of “found footage” of lives is a gathering of shattered and suspended mirrors that struggle together to reconstruct this community, so near yet invisible. This symbolic and crucial place in our suburbs, now fated to dissolve into nothing, from time to time was the scapegoat for our own inadequacies, or fuel to the fire in electoral campaigns, and the setting for useless and damaging “emergency” interventions. And yet, as the seasons passed, to our eyes the Platz increasingly became a metaphor for existence itself, its transience and its beauty.
