    Documentary

Santa Cruz del Islote is a three-acre island fifty miles off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia. A community of about 600 people, it is one of the most densely populated islands in the world. This region's lucrative fishing, which encouraged such overdevelopment, has dwindled in recent years, and the island's subsistence has become increasingly uncertain. Following a fisherman and a ten-year-old boy, this short documentary captures the complexity of cherishing a peaceful way of life that can no longer continue with ease.

Verite filmmaking is at its best when a director can dive into someone else’s world and build a connection.

Luke Lorentzen is a graduate of Stanford University's Department of Art and Art History. His first film, SANTA CRUZ DEL ISLOTE (2014) – a short documentary about a small and densely populated fishing community in Colombia – won awards at over ten international film festivals including the San Francisco International, Full Frame Documentary, Camden International, and Chicago International. His undergraduate thesis, NEW YORK CUTS (2015), explores six hair salons in disparate cultural enclaves of New York City. The film had its world premiere at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam and its US premiere at the Camden International Film Festival. MIDNIGHT FAMILY (2019) – Luke’s first feature documentary out of school – tells the story of a family-run ambulance business in Mexico City. The film won a Special Jury Award for Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award at Sheffield Doc/Fest 2019. Luke is also a director and producer on the Netflix documentary series, LAST CHANCE U (Season 4). His work explores elements of everyday life, often through rigorous formal means, questioning and experimenting with the ways in which non-fiction stories are told.
