Shot in cinemascope and shivering with elemental imagery (the thick ice that stretches across the surface of her parents’ lake doubles as an effective expression of Thelma’s isolation from the rest of the world), Trier’s film slowly mutates universal growing pains into specific ingredients for existential horror.

I make the films that my gang and I want to make. I have not done anything purely out of strategy – I am not smart enough for that.

Joachim Trier was born in Copenhagen and is a graduate of the National Film and Television School in England. He has made several acclaimed short films, including PIETA (1999), STILL (2001) and PROCTER (2002). His feature debut, REPRISE (2006), had its North American premiere at Toronto IFF, where it won the Discovery Prize. It received also festival prizes in Istanbul, Rotterdam, Milano and Karlovy Vary. His second feature, OSLO, AUGUST 31ST (2011) premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival and is one of three films on the Norwegian shortlist for submissions to the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. His third feature, LOUDER THAN BOMBS was in competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2015.
